From Bare Ground to Sustainable Livelihoods

A Call to Support Climate-Smart Fodder Production in Kakuma

From Bare Ground to Sustainable Livelihoods.

When the land can no longer provide enough pasture, livestock-owning families face a difficult choice: find new sources of animal feed or watch their livelihoods become increasingly vulnerable.

In Kakuma's dryland environment, livestock remains an important source of food, income and household resilience for many families. But the availability of natural pasture is increasingly limited. Large numbers of sheep and goats move across dry landscapes where nutritious grass and fodder can be difficult to find.

For families who depend on livestock, this is more than an environmental challenge. It directly affects their ability to maintain healthy animals, generate income and sustain their livelihoods.

Turning Bare Ground Into Opportunity

Destiny Helping Hands (DHH) is seeking partners and donors to support the establishment of a Climate-Smart Fodder Production initiative in Kakuma and surrounding communities.

The proposed initiative aims to explore practical and sustainable ways of producing fodder in a challenging dryland environment. By supporting local fodder production, communities can have an additional source of animal feed while reducing their dependence on increasingly scarce natural pasture.

The vision is simple: turn available land into a productive resource that strengthens livestock-based livelihoods.

Climate-smart fodder production can help livestock-owning households improve access to nutritious feed while building their ability to cope with changing environmental conditions.

Investing in Livestock, Families and Resilience

Healthy livestock can mean food on the table, income for a household and greater economic security for a family. Supporting the production of quality fodder therefore goes beyond feeding animals. It is an investment in the people whose livelihoods depend on them.

For communities in and around Kakuma, developing local solutions to fodder shortages could contribute to stronger and more resilient livestock-based livelihoods.

Destiny Helping Hands is therefore calling on development partners, humanitarian organisations, climate-focused organisations, agricultural partners, donors and other stakeholders to support the development of this initiative.

With the right partnerships, a landscape that appears dry and unproductive can become the starting point for a more sustainable livelihood opportunity.

From bare ground to sustainable livelihoods, the opportunity begins with partnership.

Destiny Helping Hands (DHH), Kakuma, Turkana County, Kenya, welcomes organisations and partners interested in supporting climate-smart livelihoods, fodder production and community resilience.

Together, we can help livestock-owning families build more sustainable livelihoods in the face of a changing climate.
